Waking Up With The Blues

Maybe it’s because I can’t seem to get enough sleep at night. Some nights it’s restless leg syndrome; sometimes it’s getting up three or four times to relieve myself.  Some nights I just don’t feel tired enough to go to sleep.  Or I feel tired, lay down, and am then wide awake.  Whatever the reason, I woke up not wanting to get out of bed this morning.  Normally I am a cheerful person.

I made myself get up (I’m not feeling the blues now.) and made my new “start the day right drink”.  My husband found this recipe online yesterday.  It’s a detox drink, best consumed while still warm.  It was a little tart and a little spicy, but it’s supposed to be good for you, so I’ll try it for a couple of weeks, per instructions on the website: draxe.com.

Secret Detox Drink Recipe

1 glass warm or hot water–12-16 oz.

2 T apple cider vinegar

2 T lemon juice

1/2 to 1 tsp. ground ginger

1/4 tsp. cinnamon

1 dash cayenne pepper

1 tsp. raw local honey

NOTE: Add lemon juice and honey last.

Directions:

Warm the water. Mix all ingredients together.  Best served warm but drink at desired temperature.  Drink 20 minutes before eating.  The website says to drink this two or three times a day.  I’m going to try for two.  With our schedules here, it’s hard to plan consistent meal times.

Apples and Pectin

Please forgive the lapse between posts. My husband is the one who normally writes these for me. Then I copy and paste them here, but he has been working so hard lately, and been so exhausted that he hasn’t had the energy to even think about it. So I decided I would do this one. My smoothie recipe will follow.

While researching the possible foods that fight cancer we have read a lot about unsweet apricot seeds, but have found nothing to confirm its benefits. Supposedly it cures every kind of cancer. The word “cures” already sends up red flags for me. They are illegal to sell in this country anyway. However, Tom read somewhere that apple seeds have the same benefit that unsweet apricot seeds do. We don’t know for sure if they will help, but we figure they can’t hurt. So they go in my smoothies along with everything else.

We always use fresh fruit when it is available, frozen, unsweetened when not in season. We cut up papaya and pineapple into 1-inch chunks per blender instructions, then pack them in raw local honey in pint jars. They will keep for six days without refrigeration.

I wash the apples and grapes before putting them in. No need to wash the papaya since we peel it anyway. We also dry the papaya seeds, which I add to salads and yogurt. If you eat yogurt (which has live good bacteria for digestion) I use the Dannon Oikos Greek yogurt sweetened with Stevia, a natural sweetener.

Aleta’s Smoothie Recipe

1 pint pineapple, cut in small chunks

1 pint papaya, cut up in small chunks

1 apple, washed and cut up in small pieces, with the seeds

1 banana, sliced

10-12 black or purple grapes, preferably with seeds, but seedless will do

I use the grind setting first. The honey the fruit was packed in may provide enough liquid to start with, but if not a little 100% juice (apple or grape) may be added. Once the fruit is ground up I use the smoothie setting and add more juice so it isn’t too thick to drink.

Makes 2 Oster smoothie cups and one 8-oz cup, or approximately 48 ounces.
